We Live NY Launches Round 6 of Grant Program
Statewide Partnership Supports Young Professional Retention Efforts
SYRACUSE, NY – Community leaders announced Round Six of a grant program aimed at attracting and retaining young talent throughout New York State. The We Live NY (WLNY) Livable Communities Capacity Grant Program is a matching grant program funded by Empire State Development Corporation (ESD) and administered through the New York State Urban Council (NYSUC). This unique partnership was formed as a way to engage young professionals in urban revitalization activities and to encourage partnerships between downtown and young professional organizations.
Across the nation, communities are realizing the importance of attracting and retaining young talent as a key to future economic prosperity and community revitalization. The number of established young professional organizations across New York State proves that there is a demand and interest from young professionals looking to become more involved in the future of their communities. Many times, their interests lie in their downtown centers. Empire State Development has provided grant funding to be administered on a statewide level to young professional organizations that are looking to undertake projects of benefit to their communities.
The first five rounds of grant funding resulted in awards to projects of young professional organizations in downtown areas of Elmira, the Thousand Islands, Cortland, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, Syracuse, and Auburn. Jeremy Cooney, Chair of We Live NY said,
"This grant program is unique in that it provides young professionals with capital to become engaged in shaping the future of their downtown centers. We know that young people have creative ideas for improving cities, now we're pleased to enable our peers to take action and make a difference. What we hope to see is the formation of new partnerships and the implementation of projects that enhance the experience young people have in their urban centers.”
Grant awards will be made to assist young professional organizations in developing and implementing programs or activities that will have a significant impact on the quality of life and the revitalization of the state’s downtown cores. Preference will be given to organizations that demonstrate a track record of success; bring multiple partners to the project; articulate the project’s uniqueness; possess the potential to catalyze additional projects; and, benefit a region’s downtown or urban core. To be eligible for funding, the young professional organization must be partnered with a not-for-profit organization on the application submission. Applications are available now and must be submitted by May 24th, 2013.
Applicants are invited to apply for matching grant awards between $500 and $3,000. More information on this grant program can be found on the New York State Urban Council’s website at www.nysurbancouncil.com.
